Like all toponyms in the municipality, this commune has names both in Portuguese and Mirandese (the local syncretic Asturian-Leonese dialect complex, co-official language of Portugal and given a standard orthography); in this case both words are identical in spelling and meaning: A word that originally comes from Latin maculatas, the accusative feminine plural of maculatus, meaning "blotted" - I suppose the current modern meaning might be very different.

This commune had its CoA and flag approved by the Comissão de Heráldica da Associação dos Arqueólogos Portugueses (CHAAP) (the eternally temporary body that authorizes subnational arms and flags in Portugal) in 2005 but apparently not yet officialized (i.e., published in the official journal after rubberstamped by the parliament). The CHAAP's "assessment" (Port.: parecer) was issued on 3 February 2005.
