Coat of Arms

[Sobral da Lagoa commune CoA (until 2013)] image by Sérgio Horta, 19 Aug 2010

The arms are Argent a bundle of three arrows Sable pointing upwards tied Gules, flanked by two cork oaks Vert peeled Gules, on a base wavy Vert two barrulets wavy Argent, in chief between two upwards pointing crescents Gules an inescutcheon Azure ten plates ordered 2:3:2:3. Meaning:
"Sobral da Lagoa" means "cork oak wood (grove) of the lagoon", the latter being Óbidos Lagoon (Lagoa de Óbidos), the arms reflect these meanings in the oaks and green waves. Thus the lagoon is considered a part of the sea, because the commune has no direct access to the sea. The bunch of arrows stands for the local conterminous and once identical Catholic parish patron and eponymical Saint Sebastian. Inescutcheon and crescents refer to the municipal arms of Óbidos.
