Coat of arms

[Troviscal (Oliveira do Bairro) commune CoA (until 2013)] image by Sérgio Horta, 10 Nov 2010

The arms are Argent a bunch of grapes Purpure leaved Vert surrounded by a wreath of daphne Vert, in dexter chief a lyre Gules stringed Sable, in sinister chief an open book Or bound Gules. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA DE TROVISCAL - OLIVEIRA DO BAIRRO".
Meaning:
The two branches are branches of the spurge-laurel (Latin: Daphne laureola or trovisco in Portuguese) and thus a canting element. "Troviscal" means "daphne grove" ("trovisco" being the common name for several Thymelaeaceae species). The grapevines are symbolizing the local viticulture, which is well known for its red wines. The open book is symbolizing the fact that the village is the centre of learning for a rather large area. The village also has a school of music, an orchestra and several choirs, which is surprising for such a small village. This is symbolized by the lyre.
