About the Flag

It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field gyronny of eight, red and white (left image above).
António Martins-Tuválkin, 7 Mar 1999

Visiting Ourém on 26 September 2013, I spotted a white and red version in the local fire brigade station (right image above).

Previous Flag

It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain red field (according to Sérgio Horta).

Old Coat of Arms

According to Sérgio Horta the old coat of arms had the same shield but different mural crown and scroll. The crown had four towers (town rank) and the scroll had the inscription "VILA NOVA DE OURÉM. The eagle was armed Sable and tongued Gules and was gorged with a crown Or (in fact a double coronet). That was exactly, what I spotted in 2013.

Presentation of Ourém

Oure’m is one of the municipalities of the Santarém district and of the old province of Ribatejo, covering 420 km km² in 18 communes where live 40 360 inhabitants (1992 data). Until recently, this city was a town, known as Vila Nova de Ourém.

Unofficial flags

Supposed logo flag

My source, a friend’s friend some years ago, was not very interested in flags — but as a local she should have minimal reliability. The flag was described as being «blue and green with the logo on it» and I got all interested, assuming that "logo" would mean here "coat of arms" and a portuguese municipal flag background of green and blue would be something noteworthy (back then I didn’t knew the official flag). However, this source was quite insisting that there was a wider white stripe in the middle with the logo (not the coat of arms) on it.

It is interesting to note that, in this almost unique case where the official coat of arms uses a charge seldom in portuguese civic heraldry, while the (unofficial) logo uses three motives almost ubiquous in portuguese civic heraldry: castle, grapes, and wave…
