Meaning:
These two cockades stand for the two sides of the Portuguese Civil War of 1828-1834, respectively the blue-white constitutionalists (who'd win the war and see their cockade on the new national flag, and the red-blue absolutists, see also English WIKIPEDIA. Lama is the place of an important tactical event (not really a battle) of 25 March 1834, and a monument was erected to mark it: It is a large stone plinth with a carved inscription, topped with a pyramid of 10 cannonballs, locally known as As Bolas (= The Balls). The two cockades on the arms stand for both, the event and the monument. Sword and scales are attributes of St. Michael, the local patron saint.
