Meaning:
The word "peredo" has no meaning in modern colloquial Portuguese; I think, it means something like "boulder [field]" or "crag" (akin to "penedo" and "péra"), but I cannot confirm it. Whatever it is, it´s not shown nor symbolised in the arms.
The phrase "dos castelhanos" means in Portuguese "of the Castilians": it refers to a local legend about the settlement having been refounded by people from Castile (although the neighbouring historical region of Spain is rather Leon), and the inescutcheon on the arms reflects this part of the toponym. The almond tree stands obviously for the local importance of almond growing and the wavy base symbolises the River Douro, which borders the western side of the communal territory.
