Fornelo Commune was one of the pre-2013 communes of Vila do Conde Municipality; it had 1392 inhabitants in 2011 and covered 6.3 km².

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain yellow field.

Shield Purpure, an abbot's crozier Or in pale tied by a scarf Argent, flanked by two corn cobs Or leaved Argent. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll (Bénard Guedes style) with inscription in black capitals "VAIRÃO".
Meaning:
The crozier is representing the secularised Monastery of Vairão, better known as Monastery of St. Benedict, whose image is displayed on an azulejo (a tile of blue and white) at the front door. The wheat ears are alluding to the rural charcter of the commune.
