Coat of Arms

Shield Gules with base wavy of Argent and Azure, an octagon Or charged with an escarbuncle Gules of eight connected ropes with central knot. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and long white scroll, as used for united communes, reading in black upper case serifed letters "FREGUESIA DE VISEU".
Meaning:
The escarbuncle is taken from the arms of the former Viseu (Santa Maria de Viseu) Commune. It is either a symbol of Viseu itself or an attribute of St. Mary. An escarbuncle, also carbuncle (Portuguese: carbúnculo) in heraldry is used as a buckle for fixing the shield. The number of its rays should always be mentioned, there might be six or eight rays, but sometimes the number increases up to 12. The use of ropes is unusual. Often escarbuncles show rays ending in fleur-de-lis or in pomels. Originally an escarbuncle has been said to be precious stone of such brilliance that it was formerly believed of being capable of shining in darkness.

Presentation of Viseu

Viseu is one of the seven communes of Viseu Municipality created by a merger during the 2013 changes. It had 25 800 inhabitants in 2021 and covers 9,96 km².
The commune was established on 28 January 2013 by a merger of the three communes below as Viseu United Commune (Portuguese: União das Freguesias de Viseu). It was renamed to Viseu Commune on 24 February 2015. As its symbols were approved some three months later, there had never been symbols bearing the old name on the scroll, although the scroll is of the long type used for united communes.
