About the Flag

It is a quite typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a background gyronny (meaning city rank) of red and yellow.
António Martins-Tuválkin, 19 Nov 2003

Coat of arms

The coat of arms is sable a cork oak vert glaned and decorked gules flanked by to bombs or exploding gules and or. Mural crown argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CIDADE DE VENDAS NOVAS".
António Martins-Tuválkin, 19 Nov 2003
Meaning:
The toponym "vendas novas" means something like "new sellyards", but the arms allude to something different: the local importance of cork extraction and the large local artillery facility.
António Martins-Tuválkin, 19 Nov 2003

Version without Coat of Arms

Plain (monocoloured) Portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have variations without arms: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.
Jorge Candeias, 18 July 1999

Vendas Novas had its development based in the establishment of the Artillery School of the Portuguese Army and a railway station that is the interface of two railway lines. On 21 August 1911 it was promoted from aldeia (village) to the rank of vila (town). On 7 September 1962 was created the concelho (municipality) of Vendas Novas (dettached from Montemor-o-Novo). Finally, in 1993, Vendas Novas was up-ranked from vila to cidade (city).

Previous flags

-1993

In 1993 Vendas Novas was up-ranked from vila to cidade. The new status originated two heraldic and vexillogical changes: from 4 to 5-towered mural crown in the coat of arms, and the flag from quartely to gironny flag. Both changes follow the Portuguese general rules on the matter.
Francisco Santos, 16 Apr 2003
