About the club

Cerro Porteño was established in Asunción's Barrio Obrero (Workers' Borough) on 1 October 1912, in Susana Núñez's house. The club was named for the Cerro Porteño historical site: on 19 January 1811, the Paraguayan army repelled the invaders from Buenos Aires - "porteño" means "of Buenos Aires" - led by Manuel Belgrano near a hill ("cerro"), which was renamed to Cerro Porteño to commemorate the event.
Susana Núñez selected the club's colors, blue ("azul") and "grana" (red) as the colors of the two Paraguayan traditional parties, also featured on the national flag.

Cerro Porteño is nicknamed "El Ciclón de Barrio Obrero" (The Cyclone of the Workers' Borough). The Cyclone refers to the legendary final of the championship played by the club against Nacional in 1918. After two draws (2-2 and 1-1), Cerro Porteño was about to lose the third match. However, in the seven last minutes, the players turned the table from 0-2 to 4-2.
The humble origin of the club, a matter of mockery for the other, more affluent clubs, is the pride of Cerro Porteño, which officially adopted in 1920 the nickname of "Club del Pueblo" (The People's Club).

Cerro Porteño won 32 national championships (second to Olimpia, 44 titles) and advanced 6 times to the semi-finals of Copa Libertadores (last time in 2011; lost 0-1 and 3-3 to Santos).

About the flag

Supporters of Cerro Porteño use a flag horizontally divided blue-red-blue-red-blue with the club's emblem in the center - maybe the club's official flag.

In February 2016, the Cerro Porteño supporters from the town of Pedro Juan Caballero hoisted "the most beautiful of the flags" on the highest hill of the town.
This particular flag was horizontally divided red-blue-red-blue.
