Introduction

According to [alv86], in 1810, following the Argentinian independence and the separation of the Province of Paraguay from the Viceroyalty of Río de la Plata, Paraguay claimed its independence, and on May 14, 1811, Fulgencio Yegros, Pedro Juan Caballero, Vicente Ignacio Iturbe and José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia deposed the last Spanish governor, Bernardo Velazco. On June 17, 1811, the Congress named a junta presided by Yegros, which formally proclaimed the independence. The junta governed until 1813 when the republic was declared.

During the First Congress of June 17, 1811, three different arangements of tri-colors were widely displayed in Asuncion. Beside the red, white and blue flag favored by Dr. Francia, the red-yellow-blue and green-white-blue flags were quite popular. All of them expressed sentiments of independence and freedom.

A flag with these three colors was used in 1810 by a small military expedition to Paraguay commanded by Manuel Belgrano. This expedition was sent by the provisional government of Buenos Aires (established on May 25, 1810). In those times the government of Asunción did not support the autonomist way yet and stayed in the Spanish royalist side.

The flag of this Auxiliary Expedition was apparently first raised in the Town of Curuzú Cuatiá (founded by Belgrano at the same time) in late 1810.

Manuel Belgrano's expedition was defeated by the royalists in Paraguay, but he established personal talks with Paraguayan officers. Several months later in 1811 when the Paraguayans chose the independentist way, flags with these three same colors chosen by Belgrano were raised in Asunción.

This early flag raised by Manuel Belgrano was lost and its exact design is not known. Its colors were also chosen for the present flag of the Curuzú Cuatiá Department (now part of the Corrientes province of Argentina), to pay homage to Belgrano's 1810 flag.
