[Unidentified Flags (Qatar)] image by Željko Heimer, 06 April 2003

On a TV show about the Persian Gulf that was shown on TV these days (sorry, I have few details) was shown a scene of a traditional fishing ship, one masted with an unusual flag attached at the top of the mast. The ship had no other flag hoisted, and was engaged in fishing activities on the open sea. It was a one masted ship without sail raised at the time. The flag at the mast-top was unusually large, also in measure of the hoist (it would probably match the hoist size that would be appropriate for an ensign or even larger, I'd say meter or 1.5 m in hoist) as well as in the length that was at least 1:3, maybe even more. The flag/pennant was rectangular, white bordered on hoist, top and bottom while the rest was red with a serrated white stripe near the hoist, thus dividing the red field into two parts. Something like this. (I have no special reason to associate it with Qatar rather then any other Gulf state, but there you have it.) This is, of course, a sketch...
Obviously it is a kind of Gulf Treaty Arab flag that is traditional in the region, and probably may not be associated with any state in particular. Certainly, it would have no connection to the royal flags of Bahrain that are somewhat similar.

Considering that there are five indentations, like the current flag of Bahrain, perhaps it is indeed a Bahraini, rather than a Qatari flag?
