Current aircraft marking

A roundel of red-yellow-blue. According to Cochrane & Elliott (1998) this roundel has been used from 1985 onwards; the same emblem is on the fin. This roundel was also used between 1915 and 1941 and again between 1944 and 1947 (with BYR "flag" on the fin).
Željko Heimer, 22 December 2002

Cochrane & Elliott (1998) show 5 plates for Romania. Between 1915 and 1941 and also between 1944 and 1947 Romania used a blue-yellow-red roundel (same as today). The rudder stripes had the same order of colors [before the war as Aeronautica Militară Română and Forţele Aeriene Regale ale României]. See photo on www.paulnann.com. From 1985 until today Romania uses the same 1915 roundel, as fin flash as well [as Forţele Aeriene Române] See photos:

Between 1913 and 1915 the aircraft marking was a red-blue-yellow roundel (with YBR "flag" on the fin - why would it be so that late?)
Željko Heimer, 22 December 2002

Cochrane & Elliott (1998) says that between 1913 and 1915 the roundel (from inside-out) was yellow blue-red. Rudder stripes (inside out) - the same [as Corpul Aerian Român].

1941-1944 roundel (The Cross of King Michael)

[Romanian aircraft marking]  images by Nozomi Kariyasu, 10 August 2024

Between 1941-1944 the aircraft marking was a red-yellow-blue roundel on yellow swallow-tailed cross bordered blue (with BYR "flag" on the fin)
Željko Heimer, 22 December 2002

Between 1941 and 1944 the marking was a small roundel in the center of a yellow cross bordered black. Rudder stripe same as before but only on half of it. (images show also full rudder stripes and no stripes at all). See:

Dov Gutterman, 22 June 2004

Following a discussion on the forum of www.worldwar2.ro, a site about Romania in WWII, it seems that this marking was used between May 1941 and September 1944, while Romania was involved in the war on the Axis side. It represents the Cross of King Michael, because it is based on the monogram of King Michael of Romania.

1947-1985 roundel (Communist era)

Between 1947 and 1985 the aircraft marking was a red five-pointed star bordered yellow with yellow-blue roundel in the middle; the same emblem was on the fin.
Željko Heimer, 22 December 2002

Between 1947 and 1985 the aircraft marking was a 5 points red star bordered yellow charged in the center with a small blue disc rounded by yellow ring. [as Forţele Aeriene Militare ale Republicii Populare Romîne]. See photo on www.paulnann.com.
Dov Gutterman, 22 June 2004

Following a discussion on the forum of www.worldwar2.ro, a site about Romania in WWII, it seems that the border of the star was either blue or white, not yellow. Also, the angle of the star points were usually less acute and thus made the center wider for a wider cockade.
