Overview

Salonta (in Hungarian Nagyszalonta) is a town in Bihor (in Hungarian Bihar) County of Romania close to the Hungarian border. The commune contains only the town. The town has got 20.660 inhabitants (61,1% Hungarians, 1992 census). Neighbouring communities are: Chiumeghiu / Illye, Bătar, Tulca and Mădăraş communities in Romania, Geszt, Mezõgyán, Újszalonta (before 1920 part of the town), Méhkerék / Micherechi and Kötegyán villages in Hungary.

The first mention of the settlement is from 1332 when it was a parish. Salonta was part of the Bihar County of the Kingdom of Hungary until 1556. 1556-1598 (with Bihar Co.) was part of the semi-independent Principality of Transylvania. 1598-1606 its destroyed and devastated (by Turks) territory was part of Hungary ruled by the Habsburgs. After the Bocskai's Uprising the settlemet resettled with Hajdus (free soldiers) by Prince Bocskai and became a Free Hajdu Town in Bihar County of the Principality of Transylvania. In 1658 devastated by Turks 1660-1691 its territory was part of the Timishwar Vilayet of the Osman Empire. The settlement was resettled in 1698. 1699-1850 and 1861-1919 in Bihar County, 1850-1861 part of South Bihar county.

The settlement in 1910 was a 'large village' in the Nagyszalonta district of Bihar (in Rumanian Bihor) County of the Kingdom of Hungary. Inhabitants in 1910: 15.943; 15.206 (95,4%) Hungarian, 650 (4,1%) Rumanian and 87 (0,5%) other by mother tongue, 12.409 (77,8%) Calvinist, 1.273 (8,0%) Roman Catholic, 1.082 (6,8%) Greek Orthodox, 843 (5,3%) Jew and 336 (2,1%) other by religion. From 1919/1920 (Romanian occupation / Treaty of Trianon) to 1940 (Second Decision in Vienna) part of the Kingdom of Romania. 1940-1944 part of Hungary. The Treaty of Paris reallocated it to Romania. Salonta was a town 1952-1960 in Oradea Region, 1960-1968 in Crişana Region and from 1968 is in Bihor County.

The settlement is the birtplace of the Hungarian poet: János Arany (1817-1882).
