Presentation of SDS

The Slovenian Democratic Party (Slovenska demokratska stranka, SDS) was founded in 1989 as the Social-Democratic Union of Slovenia (Socialdemokratska zveza Slovenije), renamed into the Social-Democratic Party of Slovenia (Socialdemokratska stranka Slovenije) by the end of the same year, and adopted its present name in 2003. Originally a non-Marxist social-democratic party, it has evolved into a liberal conservative party, which is nowadays a member of the European People's Party and the International Democrat Union.

SDS was the country's ruling party in 2004-2008; in the 2008 parliamentary elections it won 307,735 votes (out of a million or so cast) for 29.26% of the total and 28 seats.

The flag, which is clearly based on the logotype, is horizontally divided yellow-white-yellow with blue party name abbreviation "SDS" in centre of the white field. The party has also used this flag before the name change in 2003. The flag must have been adopted at the 5th Congress of the party in 1999, because the party name abbreviation was changed then, without renaming of the party, from SDSS to SDS, which was used at the 6th Congress in and afterwards, but a similar flag must have been used before, because the earlier abbreviation was inscribed, in the same typeface as used nowadays, as the decoration for the 4th Congress in 1995.

Out of many photos showing the party flag that may be found on the Internet, the one which gives the best look at it might be the one from the party Women Committee website. A photo from the website of the Slovenian Democratic Youth, the youth wing of the party, shows a good comparison of the flag colours' shades with those of the flag of Slovenia.

The same design is also used as a vertical and table flag (photo, Nova Pot, July 2008, p. 7), neither altered or rotated.

The party's statutes do not specify the flag, but only the logotype, as follows:

Article 4.
Sign and Symbol of the SDS
The sign of SDS is the SDS logotype. The letters of the SDS abbreviation are blue (HKS43), below them is a yellow (HKS3) line of the same length as the letters and of height two thirds that of the letters.
The symbols of the party, their form and use as well as the form and use of the official seal are set out in regulations adopted by the SDS Executive Committee.

There is a less-used table flag based on the logo.

Slovenian Democratic Youth (Slovenska demokratska mladina)

Slovenian Democratic Youth (Slovenska demokratska mladina, SDM) is the youth wing of the Slovenian Democratic Party. It was founded in 1989 as the Social-Democratic Youth (Slovene: Socialdemokratska mladina), and adopted its present name in 2003, along with the renaming of the Social-Democratic Party of Slovenia into the Slovenian Democratic Party.

The Statutes of the organization do not specify the flag, but only the logotype, as follows:

Article 6
The symbol of the SDM is the inscription "SDM" with the stylized symbol of Triglav in the background.
The symbol of the SDM will be adopted by the Congress of the SDM or the Council of the SDM with the majority of present members. The use of the symbol is regulated by the rule book, will be adopted by the Council of the SDM.

The current logotype was adopted by the Council of the Slovenian Democratic Youth on 11 October 2008 (article). The abbreviation "SDM" is yellow and the Triglav symbol is dark blue. Beneath the abbreviation, the full name of the organization in Slovene is also inscribed in dark blue letters, all lowercase, typeface Handel Gothic; this is not specified by the statutes, but the logo is always shown that way. The article notes that the "familiar yellow stars" have been dropped, but that "Triglav remains watching over the homeland in a forefatherly fashion."
On the flag, the logo is amended with another row of text, containing the words "podmladek slovenske demokratske stranke" (Slovenian Democratic Party Youth Wing), also in dark blue, all letters lowercase, the same typeface, letter size proportionally smaller so that both rows of text have the same length. The flag itself has a light blue field, with proportions 1:2 and vertical hanging; the logotype is in the bottom part. A photo showing the flag, together with national and party flags, was taken at the celebration of the 19th anniversary of the organization's founding; it is not completely visible, but the logotype, as used on flag, is shown as the decoration of a "birthday cake" made for the same occasion. A table flag of the same design is shown on this photo.

The former flag (photos) of SDMwas also with proportions 1:2 and vertical hanging, but with the gradual change of colour from light blue at the top to white at the bottom. In the then logo, which was placed in the bottom part of the flag, the blue letters SDM were placed at the top of a yellow podium consisting of three steps and the Triglav symbol was simply outlined with a blue line. Some of the last photos of the flag (as the table flag) and the logo date from June 2008. The same logo was also used before the 2003 name change and the same was probably true for the flag as well.
