The municipality of Bozcaada (2,465 inhabitants in 2012, 4,263 h; municipal website) is
made of an island located close to the entrance of the Dardanelles.
Bozcaada, known as Leukophrys in ancient times and identified with
Tenedos in Greek mythology, was settled 3,000 years ago, as evidenced by
a necropolis excavated on the island.
After its incorporation to the Ottoman Empire in 1455, Bozcaada was
fiercely disputed between the Ottomans and the Venetians. Occupied in
1912 by Greece during the Balkan Wars, the island was used for
logistical support by France and Britain during the Dardanelles War.
Bozcaada was eventually reallocated to Turkey by the Treaty of Lausanne,
signed on 20 September 1923.

The flag of Bozcaada (photo) is white/silver with the municipality's emblem in the center. "Belediyesi" means "Municipality".
The emblem features Bozcaada Castle, the first historical structure which
attracts your attention when you step the island. The castle has a very
deep history dated back to Phoenicians time with cut stones. Later on,
it was restored by the Genoese and the Venetians. After the Ottoman
takeover, Fatih Sultan Mehmet ordered the reconstruction of the Bozcaada
Fort as it is remained today. This was performed by Gedik Ahmet Pasha.

The grapes represent the island's vineyards. There are records of a
Dionysian festival held on the island in ancient times. The traveler
Evliya Çelebi (17th century) considered the local wine as the best in
the word.
Wine production decreased after the Greek population left the island,
leaving only four wineries and, mostly, table grape production.
