Eskişehir Osmangazi University

ESOGÜ (website) was founded in 1970 with the Faculties of Medicine, Engineering & Architecture and Arts & Sciences, which first started academic life in Eskişehir. The university was restructured by Law No. 496, passed on 18 August 1993, and renamed to its present name.
ESOGÜ is composed of 11 Faculties, 4 Vocational Schools and 5 Institutes.

The university is named for Sultan Osman I the Victorious (c. 1299-1323/1324), the founder of the Ottoman dynasty. The first Friday preach offered on Osman's behalf is said to have been delivered in the village of Karacasehir, now the site of ESOGÜ.

The flag of ESOGÜ (photo, photo, photo, photo, photo, photo) is white with the university's emblem and name beneath. "T.C." stands for "Türkiye Cumhuriyet", "Republic of Turkey".

The emblem, adopted in 2016, features a plane tree. The turquoise leaf in the background represents the past, while the blue, stylized leaf contour represents future.
The plane is also connected to Osman's dream, a story that became one of the founding myths of the Ottoman Empire. When staying in the house of his mentor, Sheik Edebali, "Osman saw himself lying close to the sheikh, from whose chest rose the full moon. The moon descended from the sky and sank into Osman's chest and disappeared. Then, a plane tree began to grow - it grew and flourished and became ever bigger. The tree sprouted greenery that cast a shade on the entire horizon, covering the whole of the three continents of the world.[...]"
Assistant Professor Fatih Özçelik explained to the İhlas News Agency that this is how the Oriental Plane tree (Turkish, çınar) gained its significance.
Oriental plane trees have always been very important in Turkish culture - even since before the Ottoman era it symbolized greatness in pre-Islamic Turkic societies.
As a result of Osman I's dream, when building a mosque or a namazgah (open air mosque) planting a çınar and installing a fountain within the courtyard has become a traditional trinity symbolizing the conquests of the Ottomans. When the Ottomans conquered a new land, they planted a plane tree near water as a seal of "greatness, permanency, superiority and sovereignty."

Eskişehirspor (Es-Es)'s roots stretch back to 1964 when the Eskişehir Finance & Business Sciences Academy team participated in in the 1964 Konya football tournament under the name, Akademi Gençlik. In what has gone down in club folklore, the Turkish Football Federation's İzmir representative Nafiz Yazıcıoğlu who attended the competition was reported to have told the club, "What are you doing playing amateur football, this team is good enough to make the 1st league".
The team upon returning to the Eskişehir would organize meetings with other city based clubs at the Kör Kamil Meyhanesi (Blind Kamil's Bar). A local businessmen, Aziz Bolel, distraught at the Turkish national teams loss against Bulgaria decided that the city needed a professional club to help the improvement of Turkish football. Bolel convinced Akademi Gençlik, Idmanyurdu and Yıldıztepe to merge under one club. On 19 July 1965 after weeks of negotiations and support from the Turkish Football Federation President Orhan Şeref Apak, Eskişehirspor was officially established as a professional football club with Aziz Bolel as chairman.

Eskişehirspor despite having participated for many years in the Turkish top flight have had little success in terms of honors. Es-Es played in the equivalent of the Turkish Super League between 1966-82 during which time they finished runners up 1968-69, 1969-70 and 1971-72 and won their first and only piece of silverware in 1970-71 when they lifted the Turkish Cup. They also achieved their biggest European success during this era, in 1970-71 they defeated Spanish club Seville F.C 3-2 on aggregate.
Es-Es went into decline during the 1980s and 1990s drifting between the Super League and Second Division. The club even fell into the Third Division before their revival in the late 2000s. Eskişehirspor finally made it back into the Super League in the 2008-09 season and have been improving ever since.

The club is renowned across the country for their unique supporter base which includes the Bando Es-Es, a brass band with Turkish davul drums who attend home games and create a terrific, carnival atmosphere.
The legend of Eskişehirspor is Fethi Geper (b. 1944), who played 249 matches with the club from 1965 to 1974, scoring 104 goals, and four matches with the Turkish national team (1972).

The official flag of Eskişehirspor is white with the club's emblem (photo, photo, photo, photo). The club's emblem is made of a yellow football ball charged with the letters "E" (red) and "S" (black), the year "1965" (black) and three red, green, and black stars.
The unmistakable emblem (description) was actually designed by club chairman Aziz Bolel and perfected by graphic designer Selahattin Vapur; the three stars represent the merger of Akademi Gençlik, İdmanyurdu and Yıldıztepe.

Supporters uses flags (photo) horizontally divided black and red (six stripes), the club's colours.
The club colors (description) were inspired by the French club Stade Rennais 1964-1965 French Cup win; the board saw Rennes celebrating lifting the cup on the front page of a football magazine and immediately fell in love with the club colors and adopted them as their own, believing that it would bring them good luck.
