Presentation of Kırklarelı

The municipality of Kırklarelı (97,626 inhabitants in 2016, 74,986 in the town of Kırklarelı) is located in Thrace, on the border with A GREF="bg.html">Bulgaria.

The Byzantine Emperor Nikephoros I (802-811) settled Anatolian farmers in Kırklarelı to protect the borders, as “stratiotes” (soldier-peasants). Around 850, Emperor Michael III (842-867) exiled from Malatya to Kırklarelı Paulicians who had supported Muslims against Byzantium. During the sieges of Byzantium by Simeon the Great (893-927), King of Bulgaria, in 913 and 924. Kırklarelı was invaded twice.
The first sources providing relevant information on the Ottoman conquest of Kırklarelı date back to the 16-17th centuries, so it is impossible to know the exact date of the conquest. It is generally accepted that Kırklarelı was seized by Sultan Murad I (1362-1389) after the conquest of Edirne, probably between 1367 and 1372.
The Ottomans called the town Kırk Kilise, a name with several proposed etymologies. The most probable of them, although not fully convincing, refers to the Greek name Saranta Eklesiai. Law No. 537, passed in December 1924, changed the name of the town to Kırklarelı, as suggested by Senator Fuat Umay (1885-1963).

Flag of Kırklarelı

The flag of Kırklarelı (photo) is celestial blue with the municipality's emblem. "Belediyesi" means "Municipality".
The grapes on the emblems recall that Kırklarelı is a main center of grape production, being called in Bulgarian Lozengrad, Grapes' Town, and the cradle of the hardaliye beverage.

On a visit to Kırklarelı on 20 December 1930, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk called for hardaliye being declared a national drink. Hardaliye is a non-alcoholic beverage made in and around Kırklareli from mature and fresh papazkarası grapes, sour cherry, quince leaves and black mustard seed in and around Kırklareli.
Hardaliye is made from scented and dark colored grapes being pressed for their juice and the addition of sour cherry and quince leaves, mustard seeds as well as calcium sorbate and sodium benzoate as preservatives. The mustard seed added during production prevent the drink from becoming fermented and developing alcohol.
Hardaliye is prepared during the grape harvest, at which time grapes are at their most mature. Production continues throughout September, October and November. Scented and dark grapes are washed carefully. They are placed in a barrel until about five finger widths of empty space remain. It is topped off with a layer of sour cherry leaves and layer of black mustard seeds. Finally the grape juice and grape sugar are added. Hardaliye matures at temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees centigrade. More grape juice is added every other day from the top of the barrel. It will become ready to drink in between 20 and 25 days, when it will be filtered before being served.
For centuries, grape growing has been an important occupation in Kırklareli. One of the old names of the town in Bulgarian is Lozengrad, which means "the town of grapes". The district of Üsküp has the most developed vineyards in the province. In the past almost all of the grapes used in wine-making in the inner parts of Thrace were grown in Üsküp. The production of hardaliye probably started in Ottoman times as a natural means of preserving grape juice. It is known that hardaliye was being sold in Istanbul in the 1900s. Unfortunately hardaliye was only produced domestically until 2010, when a group of entrepreneurs established a hardaliye plant in the Kırklareli Kızılcıkdere Industrial Park, thereby beginning mechanized production of the drink.

KLÜ was established in 2007.
The flag of KLÜ (photo, photo, photo, photo, photo, photo, photo, photo, photo) is white with the university's emblem in the center.

The emblem of KLÜ is, beyond reasonable doubt, a copy of the emblem of Macao, expressing little, if any, connection with Kırklareli. The winner of the public contest insisted that it was his own work, even after local and national media had revealed the scandal. This did not prevent the emblem to be widely used by KLÜ, on its flag included.
