Iğdır Province (197,456 inhabitants in 2018; 35,880 ha) is Turkey's easternmost province, bordering Armenia, Azerbaijan (Nakhchivan) and Iran.

The first logo of the province featured a sun, which rises first there, Mt. Ararat, located in the province, a cotton boll, and two folkloric dancers.

The Monument to Iğdır Genocide was inaugurated in 1999 by State Minister Ramazan Mirzaoğlu. It is composed of five swords recalling the star of the Turkish flag (when seen from above), the domes of the Seljuk mausoleums, and the shape of neighboring Mt. Ararat. The site also hosts a museum dedicated to the Turkish victims.
As said during the commemoration ceremony, the monument aimed at "commemorating the massacres of Turks committed by the Armenians during the First War and the War of Liberation"; one million Turks were allegedly killed during the 1914-1920 period. The monument is also a "a rebuttal to those who proclaimed the 24 of April 'Genocide Commemoration Day', and to monuments erected everywhere in the world to the alleged genocide perpetrated against the Armenians".
Accordingly, the Iğdır Monument is among the highest manifestations of the negationist approach of the Armenian issue by the Turkish government.
In April 2011, the Monument to Humanity erected in Kars to foster friendship and peace between Turks and Armenians was demolished for "esthetic reasons". Several observers have pointed out that nobody challenged the "esthetic" quality of the Iğdır Monument.

The new symbols of Iğdır Genocide were adopted shortly after the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, which is not a mere coincidence. Oddly enough, the "standard" pattern for provincial flags progressively implemented all over the country was not followed, either.
