Piri Reis University (website), established on 8 February 2008 by TÜDEV, is composed of 4 Faculties, 1 Vocational School and 3 Institutes. The university owns the training ship Piri Reis University, whose operation started on 21 July 2015 with 196 students (maximum capacity is 564 passengers).

The university is named for Admiral Piri Reis (1465/1470-1554). Born in the coastal town of Gallipoli, then the base of the Ottoman navy, Piri Reis was the nephew of Kemal Reis, who would subsequently served as one of the Mediterranean Admirals of the Turkish navy. From 1487 to 1493, Piri Ris served on his uncle's pirate boat, transporting back to North Africa Muslims expelled from Andalusia and fighting against other pirates. He gained a deep knowledge of the Mediterranean Sea, its ports and islands.
In 1492, the newly crowned sultan Bayazid II "invited" all Turkish pirates to serve in the Ottoman navy. Piri Reis commanded the flagship of Davut Pasha's fleet, which was led by his uncle. The unexpected death of Kemal in 1511 forced Piri to withdraw to Gallipoli, where he started the drawing of his World Map.
During the Egyptian campaign launched by Selim II, Piri Reis served again as a commander in the fleet led by Cafer Bey. After the conquest of Alexandria, he sailed on the Nile to Cairo, drawing a map and gathering geographical information on the area. When Selim II visited Alexandria after the annexation of Egypt in 1517, Piri Reis offered him a copy of his map.
After a stay in Gallipoli, Piri joined Suleiman's fleet, contributing to the seizure of Rhodes. He met there Grand Vizier Ibrahim, who recommended he compiles his observations in a book: the Book of Navigation (Kitab-i-Bahriye), written in 1521-1525 was eventually offered to the sultan.
During the second Egyptian campaign, Piri Reis was disgraced and sentenced to death: he was beheaded while aged of more than 80.

The flag of Piri Reis University (photo, photo, photo, photo) is white with the university's emblem, which is derived from the emblem of TÜDEV.
