Description of the flag

White flag with two vertical green bars at hoist and fly.  In center, a crown, and the words CORONADO and The Crown City.
Blas Delgado Ortiz, 1 August 2002

Coronado is home to about 26,000 people. It is connected to San Diego by the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge, with its distinctive curved span. Coronado is surrounded by water -- the Pacific Ocean, Glorietta and San Diego bays and is home to North Island Naval Air Station and the Naval Amphibious Base.

Coronado is almost, but not quite "surrounded by water." Coronado is connected to the mainland by a narrow spit of land stretching to the southeast, called the Silver Strand, consisting largely of a state park and Navy property. But even in San Diego most people refer to Coronado as an "island", even though technically it isn't.

Variant flags

Coronado seems to have a flag with different colors in the crown, and differences in the width of the stripes than what we have pictured.

This variant uses outlined letters and all letters as block capitals or small capitals.

It appears the city does sometimes stray from the design adopted by themselves as official, which is also the one used by the official manufacturer of the flag. Take for example this variant seen on CBS 8, which appears to have yellow in the gaps of the crown and more spacing between the letters and the crown. As far as I am aware, there are no versions of the flag currently used by the city which have red.

Former flag

Coronado did have a previous flag. The first flag of Coronado was first hoisted on March 31, 1922. This was after a contest was initiated and later closed on February 15 for a city flag and seal by the City Planning Commission. Only students of Coronado High School were eligible to submit designs for this city flag, while any resident of Coronado could submit designs for the seal. Before this contest, Coronado had no seal. A cash prize of $10 was awarded to winners in both areas. This contest concluded on February 20, when the winners were decided.

The design of this flag was a vertical triband of green white and green. In the center was a green "C" surrounding a crown of orange, similar to today's flag. It seems the designer was Louis deRyk Millen, who is also credited with designing an Imperial Beach city flag.
Daniel Rentería, 14 December 2023

By Resolution No. 715, the flag of Coronado was officially approved April 3, 1922 by the city council after it was presented to them by the City Planning.

Anniversary flag

There exists a flag celebrating the 125th anniversary of municipal incorporation. The flag is similar to Coronado's flag but with more of a "red-violet" theme. It also appears to have been designed by University Blanket and Flag.
