Description of the flag

The city of Watsonville (50,442 inhabitants in 2008; 1,660 ha) is located on the central coast of California. Named after Judge John Watson, who settled the area in 1851, Watsonville was incorporated on 30 March 1868 and chartered in 1903.

In the "Santa Cruz Sentinel", 24 February 2010, Donna Jones reports that the flag of Watsonville was adopted on 23 February 2010 by the City Council. The flag was selected among six different proposals designed by Paul De Worken, a graduate of Watsonville High School and CSU Monterey Bay. The flag shows "hiils leading to the sea" and "a bird prominent for the Pajaro Valley". River Pajaro was named "Rio del Pajaro" (River of the Bird) in 1769 by Spanish explorers after seeing a large straw-stuffed bird at the river's mouth. The flag project was launched by Councillor Antonio Rivas, who had noticed that the flag of Santa Cruz County was hoisted in city, which should also have its own flag. Rivas required the designer to enlarge the lettering of the city's name placed on the flag [sic].
