The website at www.rrstar.com reported that the Rockford Flag campaign is now accepting design ideas. The goal is to have a new flag chosen and unveiled next year [2018] on Aug. 15, which has become an annual celebration of city pride dubbed "815 Day."

According to the "Rockford Needs a City Flag" article of the website Rockford Proud, the previous flag of Rockford was designed in 1952, the year of its centennial of incorporation as a city. It was designed by Mrs. Karl G. Bloom, who had wanted a flag to be used by the drum and bugle corps, which her husband directed. The flag adopted by the city has an emerald green field to symbolize Rockford's greenery, the words "Forest City" and "Rockford, Illinois," and the city seal.
A controversy arose in 1956 when US Navy Admiral George Dufek, who was born in Rockford, landed the first aircraft at the South Pole, named his outpost "Little Rockford," and planted a Rockford flag. Mrs. Bloom reacted by reminding the city that she technically owned the copyright to the flag and insisting that the copyright symbol be attached to it. She had not charged the city for using the flag but wanted to approve all commercial use of the flag because she was selling t-shirts and souvenirs with the design. After public criticism and the possibility that the city would no longer use the flag, Mrs. Bloom gave the copyright to the city.
