Fountain Park is an unincorporated community located north of Remington in
Jasper County. It is centered around the Fountain Park Chautauqua, which was
built in 1895 to promote religious, educational, and social activities.
According to the Fountain Park Chautauqua, the flag was adopted as part of a
flag contest back in 1980. The winning flag was deigned by Chris Oden. They
sent me a photo of the flag, along with the document retaining the flag contest
which will be shown here:
Fountain Park Flag Contest
We have our
national flag and our state flag, but we do not have an official Fountain Park
flag. This year, the Fountain Park Art Colony is sponsoring a flag design
contest. The winner will receive $25 award.
The contest is open to
anyone attending Fountain Park
It is open to all ages.
Your colored
design of a flag should be submitted on 8x11 paper (regular typing paper).
Flag designed are to be turned in at the hotel by Wednesday (evening), July 30.
The designs will be judged by a panel of judges representing different groups
here at Fountain Park.
The winner and presentation of the flag will be
announced the last Saturday when the Art Patrons have their picture drawing.
It has been suggested that only symbols and not letters be used on the flag
design. (You may include a not if you want to explaining what the symbols
represent, but this is not necessary.)
Do not put your name on your flag
design. Your will be given a large envelope with a number. Put your name on the
envelope and the number of the envelope on your design. We will be able to
identify each entry by a number system. envelopes may be picked up at the
hotel.
If you have any questions please see Judy Culp. Sharon Nelson or
Beverly Hackley.

Along with the flag, the Chautauqua
also gave me information on the Fountain Park Logo:
The Fountain Park
Logo
The work of art includes many of the symbols used on the Fountain Park
flag which was designed by Chris Oden. The meaningful design of the logo was
created by Elaine Gilbert Sadler, the great-granddaughter of Jennie Atkinson,
one of the early, original Chautauqua members.
The circle around the design
represents the circle of love at Fountain Park. The love circle is formed by
cottages and the hotel encircling the inner grounds. The fountain signifies the
name of the park, the fountain on the grounds in front of the flags, and also
the beauty of the park.
Above the fountain is found the Holy Bible which
symbolizes out love of God and our religious heritage. To the left of the
fountain is a lyre and also the drama masks representing the daily programs we
enjoy. To the right is a ball and bat symbolic of the recreational activities.
The artist's palette typifies the many artists at work in the studio. The
leaves which entwine the figures stand for the beautiful trees in the park. At
the base of the circle is found an eagle signifying patriotism and our great
nation. Within the laurel wreath below the eagle is the date 1895, the year
Fountain Park was Founded.
Since that date the Fountain Park Chautauqua has
been a very special place where people come from neat and far to enjoy renewing
friendships, to make new acquaintances, to enjoy the programs and activities,
and just to relax.
