After a flag contest held by the Chamber of Commerce, the first flag of Olathe was unveiled on June 24, 1975, which was also a good time to adopt a flag as it was just before the bicentennial year. The winning design, which received $150, was created by Steve McClarrinon.

The flag has three red, white, and blue stripes pointing to three interlocking circles on a blue background. These three stripes show a direct reference to the United States of America. The interlocking circles make up the end of the key shape it forms, showing how cooperation is the key to Olathe's future. Each circle contains a symbol. One of these symbols is a Native American, which shows how Native Americans once occupied the city and are responsible for the name "Olathe", meaning "beautiful". Another circle contains a covered wagon, representing the pioneers which settled in Olathe. Finally, the third circle contains the date Olathe became a city, 1857. In addition to this, five stars form a line beneath the stripes, representing five people who were born in Olathe who later became governors.

The flag is a white field with a thin blue border. In the center is a variant of the Prairie Highlands Golf Club logo, which shows a blue outline of a Bagpiper with a tartan, similar to the ones worn by Scottish bagpipers, with the community name next to it.
