Description of the flag

Lake St. John is an unincorporated lakeside community in Concordia parish, Louisiana, USA. However, in 2003 they adopted a community flag. It was shown at www.lakestjohn.org/flag_crest.htm (site no longer available) www.lakestjohn.org/images/flag.gif.

"The Flotilla Committee is proud to present to the people of Lake St. John a community flag carrying the new official coat of arms adopted to represent and honor Lake St. John. The design was chosen for its simplicity so that it might be recognizable whether seen flying in and around Lake St. John or flying from a boat in the Gulf of Mexico. The waves of green, white and blue each represent the colors of the trees and levees, cotton fields and skies surrounding this beautiful lake.

The official coat of arms on the flag has a story symbolic of the spirit and pride that the folks of Lake St. John feel for its community. The design starting from the top depicts a pelican sitting at the top which represents the State of "Louisiana". Below this is a small red flag with white cross which represents the Knights of St. John who originated in the Middle Ages and flourished in the Kingdom of France who colonized Louisiana, hence the name "St. John". Below the cross is a representation of water and a cypress tree (with cypress knees showing at the water line). As known, cypresses are not native to salt water and are indicative of lakes and rivers, giving us our "Lake". Thus, if you read the coat of arms shield from the bottom to the top, you literally have "Lake St. John, Louisiana"

The committee would like to congratulate and thank Paige Herring, originally from this area and now practicing law in Jackson, Mississippi, for the research and thought put into the design of the coat of arms for this flag."
