Description of the flag

The flag of the City of Slidell is divided into three primary areas with light blue representing the broad expanse of sky for which the area is famous, below is a darker blue that represents the water and its influence on the city's development; on the left border is a light green area that is representing the land and forests of the city environment. The basic colors are divided by stripes of white, bordered in green, representing the three interstate highways that intersect here which have strongly influenced the rapid growth and expansion of the city. Slidell is one of very few places in the United States where three interstate highways intersect.

The seal, representing the City of Slidell, placed at the center of the intersection indicating its place at the "crossroads of the future."At the center of the circular seal is a corner of bricks representing the contribution of the brick industry in the early development of the area. They sit on a solid foundation with the date of the founding of the city inscribed in Roman numerals. They are arranged to indicate that the cornerstone has been set and the building of the city started, but with more building to come. They represent the building blocks of the future. They sit at the edge of the shore of Lake Pontchartrain and are surrounded by pine trees which are typical of this area.

The boat on the water represents the fishing, shrimping, ship building and recreational boating in the area. The rainbow over the lake represents the bright, colorful, and cheerful nature of the people and their appreciation of the natural beauty of the area. It also represents hope in the future and heavenly values. It also symbolizes the bridge across the lake and our connections with the rest of the world.

In the foreground below the center of the seal are railroad tracks which represent the strong influence the railroad had on the early development of the city. At the bottom of the seal is a camellia for "Slidell, the Camellia City" and symbolizes the people's appreciation for the natural beauty of life in the area.

On banner ribbons at the base and top of the central design are the words "Effort" and "Excellence" with arrows leading upwards for "Effort to Excellence" indicating the strong work ethic of the community and an understanding that the excellence come from effort. The arrows connecting these words are also fashioned to symbolize the early Indian occupation of the area.

Encircling the center portion of the seal is a rope border symbolizing the strong bonds that tie the community together. It also represents the maritime and lumbering industries that have historically surrounded the area. Around the rope border are the city and state names identifying the city and its location in the nation. Circling the entire design is a rim of gold, symbolizing the continuous ring of life, the natural richness of the area and the endurance of its people.
