Description of the flag

The City of Sparks, Nevada, changed its flag in 2010. You can see the new flag on the manufacturer website: www.eventflags.com/City-of-Sparks-Flag.html. It is now a white and green flag depicting a verdant landscape.

A white flag with a large yellow stylized sunflower (?) centered on it, over which reads "The City of Sparks" in a flowing italics face, set in three lines with blue letters; on the lower hoist side, partially covering the sunflower, the front view of a steam locomotive in blue.

It appears this flag was adopted in 1978.

The first flag of Sparks was approved by the city council on May 14, 1962. The creator of the flag was Patricia Fleming, at the time a seventh grader at Dilworth Junior High. Her design was then modified by Robert Challender, art student at the University of Nevada. Robert changed the colors from maroon and white to maroon and gold, which are colors used by Sparks High School. This was done as part of a contest held by the Sparks Active 20-30 Club. The design in the center of the flag was also adopted as the city's seal some time afterwards.

In the central design are sketches of a skier representing recreation, a laborer representing industry, and a train representing transportation. A ring surrounds these, within the upper part reading "SPARKS" and in the lower part "NEVADA". Along the bottom of the flag it reads, "CITY OF PROMISE".
