Students' flag for city adopted unanimously by Euclid City Council

A new, symbolic look is now official in Euclid. Last week, City Council unanimously passed an ordinance adopting legislation for a new flag for the city.

The flag was designed by high school seniors Evan Botzki of Euclid and Harrison McCreight of Villa Angela-St. Joseph. The two 17-year-old friends began discussing the idea while McCreight was interning with the city government over the summer last year. With burgeoning interest in local government, the duo began exploring different ideas and designs, working with the Euclid Historical Society and conducting research and surveys with residents throughout the community.

After developing the concept for a city flag, through multiple models and citizen input, the pair presented it to the city’s Executive Finance Committee, but no action took place as council was changing. Through it all, Botzki and McCreight both agreed the progression from idea to reality has been lively and surreal, adding they were also surprised they were permitted to move forward with the project.

“I have wanted to propose a new flag for Euclid ever since I was in eighth grade, so I was overjoyed when the opportunity to do so was presented to me,” Botzki said. “I am extremely grateful that I have been able to participate in this process, as I was not only able to provide a new symbol for my city, but was also able to gain experience with and learn about how a government functions and how items such as this become official.

“As someone with a keen interest in public service, this experience has been extremely valuable for me. The idea that a flag that I designed on my own computer is now the official flag of any city, let alone the one that I have been fortunate enough to grow up in, is extremely humbling. It encourages me to pursue other acts of civil service.”

The new flag, Botzki and McCreight detailed, incorporates the letter E, with the edge of the flag in three points. A gold star with a blue outline represents the city and its inhabitants; the color blue represents Lake Erie and Euclid Creek; gold represents Euclid’s future; and the color white represents “our openness to progress and change.”

McCreight said the experience has served as a good partnership with the city. “We’re really pleased with how things turned out. I’m still trying to understand it all myself, especially when Mayor Holzheimer Gail told me she sponsored it.”

Council President Charlene Mancuso said she is happy to support the students’ endeavor. “This is a longtime coming from my perspective,” she added. "Congratulations, young men."

As far as the flag’s production, McCreight said the city is looking to Willoughby-based Quinn’s Flags, which has a satellite location at 23300 Lakeland Blvd. “We’re hoping to do business with them when the bidding process begins,” he noted. “A flag for Euclid made in Euclid would be great.”

The flag, as mentioned by article Dave sent, was created by Evan Botzki of Euclid High School and Harrison McCreight of Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School. The City Council of Euclid adopted through Ordinance No. 126-2018 of September 17, 2018 (effective October 17, 2018) the flag proposed by these two 17-year-old Senior students. The project began while McCreight was interning with the city government over the summer last year. After Harrison was able to take part in the designing of a new city flag for Euclid, he helped design nearly 15 different flags before asking for feedback from city members. After developing the concept for a city flag, through multiple models and citizen input, the pair presented it to the city’s Executive Finance Committee, but no action took place as council was changing. A survey was conducted by the Euclid Public Library about what design of flag the people
there liked best.

The flag description is as follows: "The new flag, Botzki and McCreight detailed, incorporates the letter E, with the edge of the flag in three points. A gold star with a blue outline represents the city and its inhabitants; the color blue represents Lake Erie and Euclid Creek; gold represents Euclid’s future; and the color white represents “our openness to progress and change."
