"The Vermillion City Council voted to approve the creation of the city's first flag, at Monday's meeting. The flag will be dedicated at the city hall dedication April 30. More than a dozen entries were submitted during the course of the six-month long contest, which was held in early 2008. Vermillion citizens judged the entries and decided on a combination of a mother and daughter's designs for the first flag, Alderman Kent Osborne said. Daughter and granddaughter to distinguished USD faculty member, Wayne S. Knudson, Jane and Elen O'Brien, from Sioux City, Iowa, were the creators of the design. After the final decision by the judges, Osborne said he took the designs to the Policy and Procedure Committee who agreed on the combination of designs. Applicants were judged on various areas from simplicity, symbolism, distinctness and use of color. Osborne said the red letter "V" symbolizes the city of Vermillion, the green symbolizes the bluffs and the blue represents the rivers around the city. As Vermillion celebrates its 150-year anniversary this year, also known as
sesquicentennial, the official seal of the celebration will be placed to the right of the "V." The logo will be removed at the end of the year."

This is a very smart move. In fact the city adopts two flags - one as sesquicentennial and one as normal city flag.
