Description of the flag

The proposed flag for this city in Washington state can be seen at http://www.mycolumbiabasin.com/2019/05/28/college-place-could-soon-wave-a-new-flag.

COLLEGE PLACE, Washington – The College Place City Council meets tonight at 7 p.m. at city hall and it could adopt a new flag for the city, designed by Sarah Flotlin and Rachel Jupina. Additionally, council will consider a motion to adopt a flag design by Sarah Flotlin and Rachel Jupina as the city’s official banner.

The Washington State University Rural Community Design Initiative initiated the project in February and several students visited the College Place to draw inspiration and talked to various advisory commission members. Two community surveys and several presentations to council were held on this topic.

The various designs were presented in March, and those were narrowed down to the top four last month. City staff compiled and 132 people took the survey. Respondents could rank flag designs from 1 at the worst to 10 the best. The top design has a median score of 7.07. The top design features the background of the Beale Street Blues color from the approved city way-finding color palette, also representing the Blue Mountains located by College Place. The three white lines at the bottom represent the three tribes (Cayuse, Walla Walla, and Umatilla), and can also be seen as a reflection in a body of water. The golden leaves were taken from the shape of the Seventh-day Adventist logo and the seven leaves represent both the Seventh-day Adventist Church and the seven creeks in College Place. The curving blue and golden lines represent the Blue Mountains. The two stems of the golden leaves represent the public and Seventh-day Adventist school systems and connects the city’s values.

Symbols for area tribes, sheaves of grain, city creeks, schools, the Seventh-day Adventist Church and Blue Mountains are represented in a new design the College Place City Council accepted and adopted on May 28 to serve as its official flag.

Designers Sarah Flotlin and Rachel Jupina chose a deep Beale Street Blues color from the approved city wayfinding color palette as the background. It also represents the Blue Mountains east and southeast of College Place. Three white lines at the bottom represent the Cayuse, Walla Walla and Umatilla tribes and can be seen as a reflection in a body of water. Its golden leaves are adopted from the shape of the Seventh-Day Adventist logo and its seven leaves represent the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and the city’s seven creeks. Curving blue and golden lines represent the Blue Mountain range. The golden leaves’ two stems represent the public and Seventh-Day Adventist school systems and connect the city’s values.

The city’s predecessor logo featured the face of pioneer Marcus Whitman and the Whitman Mission National Historic Site Great Grave monument.
