Description of the flag

A green over blue horizontal bicolor separated by a narrow curved white line, with the city logo over all. It is a diamond-shaped logo, of concentric white-blue-white-green bands, and inside a building tower and the letter G. The city name and date are below on a green ribbon, and below that the inscription "TITLETOWN USA".
Valentin Poposki, 5 August 2005

Note the "G" logo on the flag and the reference to "Titletown, USA", both references to the local football team, once the dominant power in the National Football League.
Albert S. Kirsch, 17 September 2005

Visual confirmation of the flag's status exists in a photo of the GB mayor in front of the city, state and national flags can be seen at www.ci.green-bay.wi.us/artwork/schmitt_entrepreneur05.jpg.
Ned Smith, 17 September 2005

The present version of the Green Bay city flag was designed in 2004 as part of the city's 150th anniversary celebration. Evidently the previous flag was similar but did not have the present logo. What, if anything, the logo replaced is not stated in my sources, except that the old flag had the year 1838 on it. The logo was designed by a committee, collaborating with Promotional Designs, Inc. Also, unlike many American municipalities, where it is difficult to find a second copy of the flag beyond one inside the municipal hall, Green Bay promotes the use of the flag by private citizens.

Sources were several news stories, most no longer online but still available in the Google cache, and a press release from the Mayor's Office:
From www.jsonline.com/dd/destwis/jan04/201247.asp
"For starters, the party at the Lambeau Field Atrium on Feb. 26 will officially mark the city's sesquicentennial, or 150th birthday. Yet the official city flag I saw last week in the mayor's office at City Hall wears the year 1838, which - if correct - would make Green Bay 16 years tardy in celebrating its 150th. It isn't correct, of course, which is why it's being retired in favor of a new city flag...While Green Bay is the oldest community in the state, it didn't get formally chartered as a city until 1854, so the 150th birthday is appropriate. (1838 was when Green Bay became a borough, not a city, though how that date wound up on the flag is anyone's guess.)"

From the Green Bay Press-Gazette 14 Feb 2004:
"The gala will feature dinner, dancing and the debut of a video documentary of historical milestones. Tickets are $50 each and will include a *somewhat redesigned* city flag." [my emphasis]

and the GB P-G of 6 Mar 2004:
"Unveiled at last month's 150th anniversary gala at the Lambeau Field Atrium, the new flag was the product of committee work in collaboration with Promotional Designs Inc., 2280 S. Ashland Ave."

From the Green Bay News-Chronicle (undated):
"As the city's 150th anniversary is approaching, plans for the sesquicentennial celebration - formally announced in December - are taking shape. The yearlong slate of activities will honor the city's growth and progress over the last 150 years. A Feb. 26 dinner, open to the public and to be held in the Lambeau Field Atrium, marks the first of several events during the year that will commemorate the city's birthday. ... Promotional Design participated by creating the logo and enhancing the city's flag."

From press release February 25, 2005:
www.ci.green-bay.wi.us/geninfo/mayors_office/mayor_press_022505_o.html:
"In celebration of Green Bay's 151st birthday on Sunday, the Mayor is encouraging everyone to fly their city flag. If you do not have one, please visit the City Hall Welcome Center or call 448-3000 to purchase a flag to honor the great city we live in."
Ned Smith, 18 September 2005

Most U.S. cities display some feature like agriculture or manufacturing. Green Bay also does this with the tower. But you'll also find a "G" patterned after that on the helmets of the Green Bay Packers football team, and the legend "Titletown USA", after the many championships the team won in the 60s and 90s. Indeed, I am surprised the flag's colors are not green and gold.
Albert S. Kirsch, 20 January 2007

Former flag

based on photo provided by Chris Bedwell, 25 February 2012

This is an image of an older/obsolete flag of Green Bay, Wisconsin. It's a somewhat busy (yet still somewhat dull) flag, and I can honestly say this is the first flag I've ever seen to have a roll of paper towels featured so prominently.
Chris Bedwell, 25 February 2012

The flag is yellow with a cluster of items in green and yellow representing local activities - before a forest background, a Green Bay Packers helmet, a milk carton, a round of cheese, a paper towel roll, and a fishing boat. Below on a green rectangle is written GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN in yellow.
