Introduction: Atlanta Braves
Boston Red Stockings (1871-1875), Boston Red Caps (1876-1882), Boston Beaneaters (1883-1906), Boston Doves (1907-1910), Boston Rustlers (1911), Boston Braves (1912-1935 & 1941-1952), Boston Bees (1936-1940), Milwaukee Braves (1953-1965), Atlanta Braves (1966-present)

The Atlanta Braves compete in Major League Baseball as a member club of the National League (NL) East Division. The franchise was created in 1871 and is one of two remaining founding members of the National League, along with the Chicago Cubs.

The team currently plays their home games at Atlanta's SunTrust Park (2017-present). Before that, they played at Turner Field (1997-2016) and Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium (1966-1996) in Atlanta; Milwaukee County Stadium (1953-1965) in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin; and at Boston's Braves Field/National League Park (1915-1952), Fenway Park (1914-1915), South End Grounds (1871-1914), and Congress Street Grounds (1894).

The Braves have won three World Series championships in the team's history, against the Philadelphia Athletics in 1914 as the Boston Braves, against the New York Yankees in 1957 as the Milwaukee Braves, and against the Cleveland Indians in 1995 as the Atlanta Braves. The Braves are the only Major League Baseball team to win each of their championships in a different home city. Additionally, the Braves, in all their various incarnations, have won 17 National League pennants in the team's history.

Note: Be aware that in the early years baseball teams used pennants rather than flags, and a host of manufacturer's variants of these pennants and later fan flags were marketed for the Braves and their fans. They include flags, banners, and pennants too numerous to all be shown here.

About the flag

The official flag of the Atlanta Braves features the team's stylized "A" cap logo in white on a dark blue field.

The other official flag of the Atlanta Braves shows the team's official logo on a dark blue field. That logo has the word "Braves" in a red cursive script, outlined in white, above a red tomahawk with dark blue outlines and yellow strappings.

Commemorative flags

A number of commemorative flags exist for the Atlanta Braves and their fans. Most common among these are the pennants that are awarded to the teams that capture the American League and National League championships, as well as the winners of the annual World Series between the two league pennant winners.

World Series flags

There are a number of celebratory flags flown by the team at SunTrust Park and by fans to commemorate the Braves' World Series titles. The example above is for the 1995 World Series. It features a white field with the words "1995," "WORLD," and "CHAMPIONS" in three lines of dark blue lettering. In the upper hoist is the logo of the 1995 World Series, while the team's name and tomahawk logo is in the upper fly.

Division Championship flags

In Major League Baseball, a team that wins their respective league championship prior to reaching the World Series is said to have "won the pennant." This refers to the original reward for said team, which was the authorization to fly at their home field a pennant denoting the team as the champions. This tradition continues today, with teams that have "won the pennant" flying at their home stadiums pennants representing their historical championships.

Stars and Stripes team flags

These popular variants of the American national flag have been produced for all the MLB teams and displayed by their enthusiastic fans. In the dark blue canton of the first illustrated version here, the white "A" cap logo has replaced the stars while the 13 stripes have been changed from red and white to dark blue and red. The second version again uses the white "A" cap logo in the canton, this time with 16 white stars, while the stripes have been reduced from 13 to 11, alternating red and dark blue.

Logo flags

There are several varieties of fan flags incorporating any one of the Braves' logos. The example above features the full color version of the team's cap logo centered on a dark blue field. The logo shows the same stylized capital "A" from the official flag, now in red fimbriated dark blue, with the cross piece of the "A" now represented by the red tomahawk. The entire logo is outlined in white.

These examples use the team's logos as well, but on unconventional fields. The first example shows the full color version of the cap logo centered on a red field, with gold, red, and white vertical stripes at the hoist and fly. The second example has the official team logo centered on a white field that's bordered in red.

These final examples use the team's official and alternate logos from the 1970s and early 1980s logo. The first example shows the team's previous official logo on a blue field with the word "Braves" beneath the Native American warrior's face. The second example uses the team's alternate logo from that period, showing a red, cursive, lowercase "a," outlined in white and blue, is centered on a horizontal tribar of blue-white-blue with red fimbriations between the bars.

A series of flags has been created for those fans who live in households with members who support rival teams. These flags feature the logos of the two rival teams on a field that appears to be ripped in half, with the words "HOUSE DIVIDED" in white letters across the top. The example above features the Los Angeles Dodgers and their National League rivals, the Atlanta Braves.

These flags tend to be more popular among NFL football fans, but can also be found for baseball fans. The flags feature the team's colors and logo and declare the area to be part of the "Man Cave" for fans of that team.

For those Atlanta Braves fans who own yachts or sailboats and want to display their team loyalty, a separate flag is sold for them. The flag takes the form of a dark blue broad pennant with red accents and the Braves' tomahawk and name logo near the hoist.

Smaller flags, usually 12 inches by 18 inches, have become popular as golf cart or small boat flags, and there is a flag for Atlanta Braves fans who want to show their team loyalty while driving on the links. This flag is dark blue with a red horizontal stripe approximately one-third the distance from the top, bearing the word "ATLANTA" in gold capital letters. Below the stripe is the Braves' name and tomahawk logo, while there are two smaller red tomahawks featured above the ATLANTA stripe.

Mississippi Braves

image by Clay Moss, 19 May 2019

The Mississippi Braves (or M-Braves) are an AA team owned by the Atlanta Braves, who play in the Southern League. Their stadium is only about 10 minutes from my house. They play in Pearl, Mississippi (a suburb of the state capital, Jackson). This large Mississippi Braves logo flag is flown at the stadium. I think it's 6x10 feet. The flag, in smaller form, is also used as a car flag.
