Introduction: St. Louis Cardinals
St. Louis Brown Stockings (1882), St. Louis Browns (1883-1898), St. Louis Perfectos (1899), St. Louis Cardinals (1900-present)

The St. Louis Cardinals compete in Major League Baseball as a member club of the National League (NL) Central Division. The franchise was created in 1882 as a founding member of the now defunct American Association. With the failure of the American Association, the Cardinals transferred to the rival National League in 1891, where they still compete today.

The team currently plays their home games at St. Louis' Busch Stadium (2006-present). Before that, they played at Busch Memorial Stadium (1966-2005); and Sportsman's Park and Robison Field (different names for the same ballpark, 1882-1966).

The Cardinals have won 11 World Series championships in the team's history, including against the New York Yankees in 1926, 1942, and 1964; the Philadelphia Athletics in 1931; the Detroit Tigers in 1934 and 2006; the St. Louis Browns in 1944; the Boston Red Sox in 1946 and 1967; the Milwaukee Brewers in 1982; and the Texas Rangers in 2011. Additionally, the St. Louis Cardinals have won 19 National League pennants in the team's history.

Note: Be aware that in the early years baseball teams used pennants rather than flags, and a host of manufacturer's variants of these pennants and later fan flags were marketed for the Reds and their fans. They include flags, banners, and pennants too numerous to all be shown here.

About the flag

The official flag of the St. Louis Cardinals features their current logo centered on a white field. The current logo, adopted in 1998, shows a red, male cardinal perched atop a yellow baseball bat. Below the bat and bird is the word "Cardinals" in red, cursive letters.

There is an alternate version that shows the team's cap logo — interlocking white letters "STL" fimbriated in dark blue — on a red field.

The team's flags, featuring either the cardinal or letter logos, are produced and used with white, red, dark blue, or light blue fields, as with the alternative versions shown above.

Previous flags

Previous flags of the St. Louis Cardinals used the team's old logos, including the example above, which features the 1967 logo centered on a white field. The logo itself features a cardinal wearing a red baseball cap and standing on a yellow baseball bat against a baseball background. The entire logo is enclosed within a red ring bearing the words "ST. LOUIS CARDINALS" in white capital letters.

Commemorative flags

A number of commemorative flags exist for the St. Louis Cardinals and their fans. Most common among these are the pennants that are awarded to the teams that capture the American League and National League championships, as well as the winners of the annual World Series between the two league pennant winners.

In the case of the St. Louis Cardinals, the flags that fly at their home stadium to celebrate their World Series victories take the form of a white triangular pennant, edged with a red border, with the year of the World Series championship in red numbers. The examples above are for the Cardinals' first World Series championship in 1926 and their most recent one in 2011.

Division Championship flags

In Major League Baseball, a team that wins their respective league championship prior to reaching the World Series is said to have "won the pennant." This refers to the original reward for said team, which was the authorization to fly at their home field a pennant denoting the team as the champions. This tradition continues today, with teams that have "won the pennant" flying at their home stadiums pennants representing their historical championships.

These popular variants of the American national flag have been produced for all the MLB teams and displayed by their enthusiastic fans. In the canton of the first illustrated here, the white stars of the national flag have been overlaid with the current Cardinals logo. The 13 red and white stripes have been replaced with dark blue and red stripes. The second variant shown here features the Cardinals' interlocking letters logo as well as less stripes and less stars, 11 red and dark blue stripes and 15 stars to be exact. Both of these designs can be found incorporating either of the team's logos in the canton.

Other team flags for the Cardinals feature the team's logos — present and previous — on a plain color field, with stripes. The example above shows the current team logo on a red field, with dark blue and white horizontal stripes, and dark blue, red, and white vertical stripes at the hoist.

These flags tend to be more popular among NFL football fans, but can also be found for baseball fans. The flags feature the team's colors and logo and declare the area to be part of the "Man Cave" for fans of that team.

A series of flags has been created for those fans who live in households with members who support rival teams. These flags feature the logos of the two rival teams on a field that appears to be ripped in half, with the words "A HOUSE DIVIDED" in white letters across the top.

For those St. Louis Cardinals fans who own yachts or sailboats and want to display their team loyalty, a separate flag is sold for them. The flag takes the form of a red and dark blue burgee with the Cardinals' "bird on a bat" logo.

Vertical banner

For something different, St. Louis Cardninals fans may choose a vertical banner. This flag has a red field with a dark blue vertical stripe in the center, fimbriated red and white. Centered on the field is a logo showing a baseball diamond, a baseball, and the team's "bird on a bat" logo. At the top of the banner is the Cardinals' "STL" logo, and at the bottom is the logo of the National League.
