Introduction: New York Mets
New York Mets (1962-present)

The New York Mets compete in Major League Baseball as a member club of the National League (NL) East Division. The franchise was created in 1962 as a replacement for New York City's departed National League teams, the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants. For their team colors, the Mets use blue to represent the Dodgers and orange for the Giants.

The team currently plays their home games at New York City's Citi Field (2009-present). Before that, they played at Shea Stadium (1964-2008) and the Polo Grounds (1962-1963).

The Mets have won two World Series championships in the team's history, against the Baltimore Orioles in 1969 and against the Boston Red Sox in 1986. Additionally, the New York Mets have won five National League pennants in the team's history.

Note: Be aware that in the early years baseball teams used pennants rather than flags, and a host of manufacturer's variants of these pennants and later fan flags were marketed for the Mets and their fans. They include flags, banners, and pennants too numerous to all be shown here.

About the flag

The official flag of the New York Mets features the team's official logo centered on a blue field. The logo shows the New York City skyline in blue against the background of a baseball with a white bridge in the foreground. Across the center is the word "Mets" in orange cursive script. The circular is edged in orange, fimbriated white.

The other official flag of the New York Mets is a very simple one, displaying the team's interlocking "NY" cap logo in orange on a blue field.

Commemorative flags

A number of commemorative flags exist for the New York Mets and their fans. Most common among these are the pennants that are awarded to the teams that capture the American League and National League championships, as well as the winners of the annual World Series between the two league pennant winners.

In the case of the New York Mets, the flags that fly at their home stadium to celebrate their World Series victories take the form of a white flag with a thin orange border and three lines of blue text. The top line of text has the words "NEW YORK" in capital letters and the Mets word logo; the second line has the words "WORLD CHAMPIONS" in capital letters; and the bottom line has the year of the championship in large blue numbers.

Division Championship flags

In Major League Baseball, a team that wins their respective league championship prior to reaching the World Series is said to have "won the pennant." This refers to the original reward for said team, which was the authorization to fly at their home field a pennant denoting the team as the champions. This tradition continues today, with teams that have "won the pennant" flying at their home stadiums pennants representing their historical championships. The flags flown by the Mets at Citi Field celebrating their National League titles are similar to their World Series flags, being a white field with a thin orange border and blue text. The top line of text has the words "NEW YORK" in capital letters; the second line is the Mets word logo; the third line has the words "NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONS" in smaller capital letters; and the bottom line has the year of the NL championship.

These popular variants of the American national flag have been produced for all the MLB teams and displayed by their enthusiastic fans. In the blue canton of the first illustrated version here, the orange "NY" logo outlined in white sits among 16 white stars, while the red and white stripes have been replaced with 13 blue and orange stripes. In the second version, the stars in the canton have been replaced by the team's New York City skyline logo, again with 13 blue and orange stripes.

These examples use the team's city skyline official logo as well. The first shows the logo centered on the blue-white-orange vertical tricolor of the New York City flag, replacing the coat of arms in the center. The second example has a blue field with a white horizontal bar through the center, punctuated with vertical blue pinstripes reminiscent of the Mets' uniforms. The white bar is fimbriated orange, and the city skyline logo is centered on the flag.

A series of flags has been created for those fans who live in households with members who support rival teams. These flags feature the logos of the two rival teams on a field that appears to be ripped in half, with the words "A HOUSE DIVIDED" in white letters across the top. The example above features the New York Mets and their intracity rivals, the New York Yankees.

Smaller flags, usually 12 inches by 18 inches, have become popular as golf cart or small boat flags, and there is a flag for New York Mets fans who want to show their team loyalty while driving on the links. Three-quarters of the flag is blue with the New York cityscape logo centered and a small version of the interlocking "NY" cap logo in both the upper and lower hoist corners. The remaining one-quarter on the fly creates an orange vertical bar with the words "NEW YORK" in blue capital letters spelled out vertically.
