Introduction: Miami Marlins
Florida Marlins (1993-2011), Miami Marlins (2012-present)

The Miami Marlins compete in Major League Baseball as a member club of the National League (NL) East Division. The franchise was created in 1993 as an expansion team, playing as the Florida Marlins in Miami, Florida. The team officially changed their name from "Florida" to "Miami" in November 2011 following an agreement between the club, the city of Miami, and Miami-Dade County, who owns the team's new ballpark.

The team currently plays their home games at Miami's Marlins Park (2012-present). Before that, they played at Hard Rock Stadium (1993-2011).

The Marlins have won two World Series championships in the team's history, against the Cleveland Indians in 1997 and against the New York Yankees in 2003. Those are also the only two years that the Marlins have won the National League championship. In an interesting piece of trivia, both years that the Marlins won the NL pennant and the World Series, they qualified for the playoffs as a Wild Card team, making them the only team to win all their championships without ever having won a divisional title. They are also the only team in Major League Baseball, the National Football League, National Basketball Association, or the National Hockey League to have never lost a playoff round in the team's history.

Note: Be aware that in the early years baseball teams used pennants rather than flags, and a host of manufacturer's variants of these pennants and later fan flags were marketed for the Marlins and their fans. They include flags, banners, and pennants too numerous to all be shown here.

About the flag

The official flag of the Miami Marlins has likely changed recently, as the team adopted a new official logo and a new cap logo beginning in the 2018 season. As of May 2019, however, all of the flags currently for sale on the team's official website still incorporate the previous logo designs.

The most recent official flag features the team's official logo centered on a black field. The logo shows a white capital "M" outlined in orange and teal above the word "MIAMI" in smaller, white, capital letters. A marlin fish can be seen jumping from behind the large "M." The fish is orange on top and teal on the bottom, with a black stripe going down its side.

Another official flag of the Miami Marlins shows the team's previous cap logo centered on a field of orange, white, teal, or black (there are photographs online showing all four possible field colors). The cap logo removes the word "MIAMI" from the official logo, but otherwise remains identical.

Previous flags

The Marlins have had several official flags in the team's short history, and nearly all have featured the team's official and/or cap logos centered on a field of one of the team's colors.

Commemorative flags

A number of commemorative flags exist for the New York Mets and their fans. Most common among these are the pennants that are awarded to the teams that capture the American League and National League championships, as well as the winners of the annual World Series between the two league pennant winners.

In the case of the Miami Marlins, the flag that they fly to celebrate their 1997 World Series championship has the Florida Marlins' logo centered on a white field. Arched above the logo are the words "1997 WORLD SERIES" in black letters, with the word "CHAMPIONS" below the logo in similar lettering.

Division Championship flags

In Major League Baseball, a team that wins their respective league championship prior to reaching the World Series is said to have "won the pennant." This refers to the original reward for said team, which was the authorization to fly at their home field a pennant denoting the team as the champions. This tradition continues today, with teams that have "won the pennant" flying at their home stadiums pennants representing their historical championships.

These popular variants of the American national flag have been produced for all the MLB teams and displayed by their enthusiastic fans. In the black canton of the first illustrated version here, the Marlins logo sits among 16 white stars, while the stripes have been reduced to 11, alternating orange and black. In the second version, the 50 stars in the black canton have been overlaid with the team's logo, this time with 13 black and orange stripes.

There are several varieties of fan flags incorporating any one of the Marlins' logos. The example above features the marlin jumping over the capital "M," centered on an orange field, with vertical blue, orange, and white stripes on the hoist and fly edges.

These examples are from the team's early days as the Florida Marlins and feature the logo of that era. The first example shows the jumping marlin and a stylized black capital "F," fimbriated teal, on a horizontal tricolor of black-white with teal pinstripes-black. The second example shows one of the team's early alternate logos on a teal field. The logo has the word "MARLINS" in black and teal lettering across a baseball with a marlin jumping over the "M."

These flags tend to be more popular among NFL football fans, but can also be found for baseball fans. The flags feature the team's colors and logo and declare the area to be part of the "Man Cave" for fans of that team.

For those Miami Marlins fans who own yachts or sailboats and want to display their team loyalty, a separate flag is sold for them. The flag takes the form of a black burgee with orange accents and the Marlins' 2012-2017 colorful "M" logo near the hoist.
