Description of the flag

The American Legion is a federally chartered corporation formed in Paris in 1919 by veterans of the American Expeditionary Forces. Their mission is to sponsor programs that support veterans, national security, and patriotism.

The flag of the American Legion features the organization's seal centered on a dark blue field. Judging from the photographs online, some variation in the shade of blue in the field is allowed, as is variation in the amount of dark red in the seal. Some American Legion posts have flags as depicted here, while others have flags with lighter shades of blue and seals that are entirely gold in color or show red only in the central part of the seal around the "U·S".

"Eligibility for American Legion membership is limited to those honorably discharged veterans and current personnel of the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Air Force who served at least one day of active duty during any of the following periods. Merchant Marine eligibility was from December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946 (WWII).

Department of Italy flag

[Department of Italy American Legion flag] image located by Bill Garrison, 26 August 2007

"American Legion" flag (usually, the "AL" has members who served in the U.S. Military, but they did not necessarily fight in WWI overseas). Whereas the "Veterans of Foreign Wars" (the "VFW" has members who served in the U.S. Army AND who 'fought'/campaigned in a military conflict/war overseas). However, I do not know the specifically membership rules of either organization during the 1920-1930s, when this picture was taken.

American Legion Centennial

The American Legion is celebrating its 100 Anniversary this year. It was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Today, its membership stands at nearly 2 million with more than 13,000 posts worldwide. The posts are organized into 55 departments for each of the 50 states, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines. Over the years, the Legion has influenced considerable social change in America, won hundreds of benefits for veterans and produced many important programs for children and youth. The Legion is one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States.
Therefore, nobody should be surprised that a special flag was provided to mark their centennial.
