Overview

Mustique is a small private island of the Grenadines islands, part of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The island has 500 inhabitants (1.300 in peak season) on 5.7 km2. The island is owned by the Mustique Company, which is owned by the island's home owners. The island has approximately 100 private villas, many of which are rented out through the Mustique Company.

According to the Mustique Company:

"In 1958 Lord Glenconner, Colin Tennant, arrived on Mustique and bought the island for just £45,000 despite the fact it had no roads, no jetties and no running water. Initial ambitions were to see it thrive as a cotton plantation, but these plans did not prove economically viable and Tennant looked for other ways to develop the island. Having gifted his good friend Princess Margaret a plot in 1960, there was considerable media interest in Mustique as a destination and in 1968 he formed the Mustique Company to develop a private island hideaway for the rich and famous. There were two architects who helped shape the island during its early years; Arne Hasselqvist, a resourceful construction engineer from Sweden, who was employed by the company to bring Tennant’s vision to life; and Oliver Messel, a leading British theatre set designer who had developed a reputation for the houses he had designed on neighbouring Barbados."

Several artists, royals and celebrities have spent or spend time on Mustique, including Tommy Hilfiger, Quincy Roberts, David Bowie, Shania Twain, Mick Jagger, Julian Schnabel...

According to his website, painter Stefan Szczesny (born in 1951 in Munich) has regularly spent time on Mustique since the mid-90s.
“The artist has been attracted in particular by the island’s tropical bounty, to which he has become deeply attached and which has exerted a great influence on his work. On Mustique he also finds the peace and quiet he needs in order to get to the very core of his creative work. Over the years, Mustique has become something of a second home for the artist and his family.”
He has created a “flag” for Mustique island: yellow border, and a patchwork of a dozen of his Mustique-inspired artworks. The picture of the "flag" flying can be seen on his website:
