Description

A red flag with a white border on all four sides, as wide as a fourth of the flag's height. This is simply the no. 2 flag described in the General Maritime Treaty 1820, with a slightly bigger central panel.

Red flag with white border all around, width 1/4 of hoist. Source: Album des Pavillons 2000. A note explains that the flag is often replaced by the Union Flag — whatever that means exactly.

Reports of Sharjah flying the Federal Flag

According to Smith 1981, Crampton 1990, Barraclough & Crampton 1981 and Pedersen 1980, Sharjah used until 1975 the same design as Ras al-Khaimah, now only the national flag of the United Arab Emirates is used. All my sources say Sharjah abolished its flag.
Mark Sensen
, 19 November 1995 and 7 March 1999

That is wrong. Not Sharjah but Fujairah adopted the United Arab Emirates flag instead of her old plain red flag. The flags of Sharjah and Ras al-Khaimah are red with a white border, Fujairah's flag is the federal flag. The sources quoted by Mark Sensen are all by well known authors, but all of them copied Whitney Smith. And, as far as I can remember, even Whitney Smith corrected his fact from Sharjah to Fujairah in one of his famous Flag Bulletins. There are only very few authors of flag books who really research what they write. Most writers only research in other authors' books, so once a mistake is published, it may go on forever.
Ralf Stelter
, 2 April 1999

During a holiday in Sharjah this year, with frequent trips around town and emirate I never saw any flag other than that of the United Arab Emirates, so the Sharjah [flag] is probably abolished.
Mats Lindqvist, 8 October 2000

Mats Lindqvist's information may be correct. Since ca. 2000/2001 the new coat of arms of Sharjah shows two crossed UAE flags. So I think that Sharjah has dropped her historical flag.

Sharjah's Department of Seaports and Customs

Sharjah has a special flag for its national port (Port Khalid) and Airport (Sharjah international airport). The flag is white with a red shield in center. In the shield there are three white birds (like seagulls, one beside the other). The flag is based in the logo of the port and airport. Source: Flaggenmitteilungen [fbn] no. 56 (probably from personal observation of some collaborator).

I wonder if the shield described in Flaggenmitteilungen [fbn] is that of Sharjah's Department of Seaports and Customs, as it appears at their website. In which case, the reported flag would be as in the above image.
