Johnny Andersson, 08 Jul 2004
On 9 December, the flag of the municipality of Tandil was officially
unveiled. The jury selected four proposals and awarded a first prize,
a second prize and two special mentions. The jury was made of a
representative of the municipal government, a municipal councillor, a
grpahic designer, an historian and Mariana Asurabarrena, who already
contributed to the selection of the provincial flag of Buenos Aires
as a servant of the Secretary of Culture of the province. The jury
awarded the first prize to Daniela Delceggio, whose work was selected
as the official flag of the municipality.

The link to the above text is dead but the municipal website of Tandil
has now a page presenting the flag.
The flag, designed by Daniela Delceggio, graphic designer at the
University of Buenos Aires, symbolizes the different activities that
contribute to the developpment of the town.
- The stone, hard and inalterable, represents a concentration of power,
in relation to the divine, eternal powers. Heavy and hard, it should
not be interpreted as rigid and dead but as a means of transmitting
life.
- The sky is associated with the masculine activity, the fecundation of
the earth by the sky being required for the birth of all the living
organisms thriving on the Earth.
- The green colour represents the vegetal kingdom, water, life, the
cyclic renovation of the natural environment and hope.
- The grey colour represents the local resource in ore, exploited since
the European immigration and which caused the colonization of the area.
The gearing stands for power, work and industry of a town that was
originally forged by strong hands.
- The leaves represent agriculture and cattle breeding, two activities
promoted by the fertility of the soil that boosted the development of
Tandil.
- The curves represent the mountains, aged 2,500 million years, rounded
by natural erosion.
- The white and blue colours stand for the union with the Argentine
nation, symbolizing belonging and contribution to the political,
social and economic growth.
- The shaky stone is the icon representing the town at the world level
and one of the main tourist spots of the town.
The moving stone of Tandil fell down more than 90 years ago and was
recently replaced by a replica.
