After the break up of Austria-Hungary in 1918 the new state began using the ancient Austrian Landesfarben as its flag. This was officially adopted in 1919. The use of the triband was forbidden in 1938 after the Anschluss but was re-established after the end of World War II.

The flag continued to be used de facto after it was replaced with the new one in 1934. For example, the military regulations replaced the flag only in 1936.


State Ensign

This flag was used on vessels owned by the Austrian federal administration and government, mainly on Danube.

The Austrian flag red-white-red with a white shield in the canton containing the coat of arms was adopted on the 31st of May1929. According to the law, this is not an army flag. It is for the use on inland rivers on vessels of the federal Austrian administration/government. In German: "der im Dienste der österreischischen Bundesverwaltung stehenden Fahrzeuge".  The distance from the upper/left part of the shield to the upper/left part of the flag is one fifth of the height of one stripe. Be the height of one stripe, the height of the shield is equal to 1,3x h and the length equal to h. The shield is of XIXc French style.  The bottom of the shield is on the middle of the white stripe. The1929 eagle has no chains. Drawings are in the law.

War Ensign and Jack

The variation of the state flag was used as an ensign on motor boats of the Federal Army on the Danube and as a jack on patrol boats. In the ratio 10:18 it was used as a jack on patrol boats.


High Officials Pennant

The pennant was used for higher military, national and state officials on vessels. The shorter version was prescribed for motor boats and the longer for patrol boats.
