The municipality of Colniza (31,597 inhabitants in 2009; 27,948 sq. km) is located in the north-western corner of Mato Grosso, bordering the States of Rondônia and Amazonas. Colniza was planned in the 1970s but actually emerged in the 1980s. Originally a District of Aripuanã, Colniza became a municipality by State Law No. 7604 of 26 November 1998.

The flag was adopted in a contest open to the municipal and state schools. Designed by Pr. Márcio Aparecido Lopes Pereira, the flag is prescribed by Law No. 162-3 of 3 November 2004. The flag is divided green-blue along the descending diagonal, with a white "Brazilian" lozenge charged with a round emblem. The upper part of the emblem shows an orange rising sun on a yellow background, symbolizing the structuring and expanding municipality. The lower, main part of the emblem is green with two rice panicles and two coffee branches, representing the two main crops in the area. The horizontal line separating the two parts of the emblem symbolizes the development of cattle breeding. Green represents hope, the exuberant flora and the economic importance of plant products; yellow represents different resources: plant products, timber, mining and cattle breeding; blue represents the sky and the waters; white represents faith, charisma, humility, life and peace. The orange sun represents the strength and hospitality of the local people. Red represents struggle and conquest of ideals. Argent represents the separation from the neighbouring municipalities.
