Aalen Coat of Arms

Shield Or, an eagle Sable tongued Gules, upon his breast an inescutcheon Gules, charged with a crooked eel Argent.
Meaning:
Aaalen had first been mentioned as a city in 1339. The first seal, known since 1385, just displayed the canting eel (German: Aal). Though Aalen had become a Free Imperial City in 1360, the eel alone was depicted on seals and arms until the 20th century, e.g. by Otto Hupp. The eagle with inescutcheon appeared since 1691 in minor seals, secret seals and reversed seals. The tinctures of the eel were known since the 16th century. Since 1939 the arms with eagle prevailed. In 1956 the tinctures of beak and claws changed from black to red.
