It was a blue-yellow vertical bicolour with centred arms.
The flag was approved on 8 January 1996.
After the approval the county council didn't adopt the flag, as the colours were said to be inappropriate, only referring to Braunschweig-Lüneburg, to which parts of the county belonged in the past.

Altmark County Salzwedel Coat of Arms

[Altmark Salzwedel CoA] image by Jörg Majewski, 16 Jan 2007

Shield parted per pale; at dexter Argent a demi-eagle Gules armed Or andcouped per pale; at sinister parted per fess, above Or a lion rampant Azure armed and tongued Gules, beneath Azure a finial Or topped by a cross moline.
Meaning:
The demi-eagle is a differentiation of the arms of the Margraves of Brandenburg, local rulers for centuries. The lion is representing the Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg and Klötze Subcounty (Amt), as the subcounty became a possession of the dukes in 1343, , later of the Electorate of Hannover. Finally it was ceded to Prussia in 1815. The finial had been a metal fitting and was fixed on the shield of Margrave Albrecht the Bear. It was already displayed on his seal from 1162 and that one of his son Otto I from 1164. The finial is alluding to the Askanian kin and especially to Margrave Albrecht, who gained the fiefdom over the Altmark in 1134 and started the conquest of Brandenburg the same year and to the historical importance of this margrave for the general development of the region.
