Wolframs-Eschenbach Coat of Arms

Shield Vert a bend sinister wavy Argent.
Meaning:
Eschenbach was first mentioned in 1057. Since 1309 it was called Obereschenbach in order to distinguish from namesake villages. It had been a market town, which belonged to the Franconian Bailiwick of the Teutonic Order since around 1212. In 1332 King Ludwig the Bavarian granted city rights. Prints of local seals are known since 1398, displaying the a bend wavy as canting element for the namesake creek. Until the 19th century the seals had circumscriptions referring to the name Obereschenbach. The direction of the bend changed, but no date is given in source. The current tinctures were taken from the image on the tower of the local church, dedicated to St. Mary, from 1450. They changed frequently. In order to honour the famous minnesinger Wolfram of Eschenbach (probably 1160/80 - 1220), the city was renamed in 1917 by a decree of King Ludwig III of Bayern.
