Blankenhain Coat of Arms

Shield Azure, a lion rampant Argent, crowned Or and tongued Gules.
Meaning:
Blankenhain had been ancestral seat of the Lords of Blankenhain, a branch line of the Counts of Gleichen, as vassals of the Archbishops of Mainz. The lords were succeeded by the Counts of Hatzfeld. Since 1794 it had been under direct rule of the archbishopric. Afterwards it became a part of Preußen in 1802, of Westphalia in 1806 under French administration and in 1815 of Sachsen-Weimar. Otto Hupp (1925) displayed the lion without crown. In times of the GDR the arms displayed a red lion rampant between two green firs on a green base, charged with a piece of chinaware. The old tinctures were restored shortly after 1990 and the crown was added. The lion is taken from the arms of the Counts of Gleichen. The piece of chinaware is referring to the local porcelain manufactories since 1790, especially to a branch of the famous Meißen Porcelain.
