Gessertshausen Coat of Arms

Shield parted per bend of Argent and Gules, over all St. Mary, nimbed and crowned Or, dressed Gules and coated Azure, holding Jesus Christ by her right arm and a rose proper by her left hand.
Meaning:
The village belonged to the Bishopric of Augsburg, before most local estates were sold or donated to the Cistercian Oberschönenfeld Nunnery, which had been founded in 1207. Until 1803 the nunnery possessed nearly the whole village. Since the 14th century the nunnery used a seal, displaying St. Mary with child sitting on a bench and holding a rose. The municipal arms modified the seal slightly wih St. Mary standing. The arms stress the close relationship between village and nunnery. The background colours display the arms of the Reeves of Hattenberg, being part of the kin of the Lords of Kemnat. In 1254 Volkmar II of Kemnat granted the right of patronage over Gessertshausen and the bailiwick over Dietkirch hamlet to the nunnery. He is the actual founder of the nunnery together with the Counts of Dillingen.
