Gärtringen Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per pale into red and gold (= yellow). The dexter side displays a golden (= yellow), sinister facing eagle's claw. The sinister side displays a red chalice.
Meaning:
Gärtringen was - together with Herrenberg - purchased by Württemberg from the Palatine Counts of Tübingen. The chalice as a local symbol for Gärtingen is mentioned in 1681 by Kieser within his forestry guide, it didn't appear on any seals. The chalice might as well be an attribute of St. Vitus, the patron saint, or it might be a symbol of the former Herrenberg Abbey, to which the local parish belonged. In 1920 the local council adopted the eagle's claw as arms, its origin is unknown. In 1957 both symbols were combined. The colours are those of Herrenberg.

Banner and coat of arms were approved on 24 July 1957 by minister of interior of Baden-Württemberg, published in GABl 450/1957.
