Berchtesgadener Land County

Blue-white-blue stripes, approved 12.12.1973. The county is situated in the south-eastern tip of Bavaria, close to Salzburg. The northern part of the county belonged to the prince-bishopric of Salzburg historically; hence, the lion in the arms is the same as the one in the Austrian state of Salzburg. The seat of the county is Bad Reichenhall.

From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:
"The arms were granted on May 29, 1973.
The arms combine the keys from the arms of the former district of Berchtesgaden, with the lion of Salzburg. The former district Laufen was ruled for a long time by the bishops of Salzburg. The base shows the arms of Bavaria, as the area around Bad Reichenhall belongs to the oldest parts of Bavaria."
Literature: Stadler 1964-1972.
Santiago Dotor, 5 November 2003

In 1972 the southern part of Laufen County and the county-free city of Bad Reichenhall had to join the augmented Berchtesgarden County, which was rrenamed into Berchtesgadener Land County on 1 May 1973.

White, blue. approved ca. 1964. (...) The use of this flag was probably unofficial since white-blue is reserved for the Bavarian flag and may not be used by counties or municipalities.

The arms were approved on 16 May 1962. The two keys are the symbol of St. Peter, the patron saint of the former Principality and Abbey of Berchtesgaden. The principality was directly sudject to the Emperor, which is symbolised by the Imperial Orb. The lower part shows a salt bucket, as salt mining historically was the main source of income.
