The charge is the Hornhäuser Reiter, the motive of the Hornhäuser Reiterstein, the Riderstone of Hornhausen. The stone, excavated in 1874, is the first of four panels found in the municipality of Hornhausen in Börde district. The rider is presumed to depict a Franconian warrior from the 7th century.

Flags and arms were adopted on 12 July 2007 by the local parliament (Kreistag) and approved by Minister of Interior of Saxony-Anhalt on 10 August 2007.

Shield quartered of Argent and Gules, 2nd quarter charged with a grain ear Or, 3rd quarter charged with a scythe blade Or, over all a bend wavy Azure.
Meaning:
The Magdeburger Börde is one of Germany's breadbaskets. Blade and ear are stressing the rural character. The bend wavy is representing Bode River and its wetlands.

Shield parted per bend sinister wavy, above right Gules a beech branch Argent with five leaves, beneath left a bend sinister wavy Azure.
Meaning:
The bend wavy is representing Ohre creek, name giver of the county. The brnach is symbolising the extended beech groves of Flechtingen. The colours of the county had been those of the Archbishopric of Magdeburg.
